Alex Gutierrez: A Visionary Journey from Silicon Valley to Asphalt Excellence
The founder and CEO of American Asphalt, Alex Gutierrez, took an unconventional path into the asphalt and construction industry. Born and raised in San Jose, California, Alex began his career in the electronics industry, where he was among the first employees at Atari. His time there ignited a passion for innovation and
success, propelling him up the corporate ladder. As Silicon Valley boomed, he transitioned into manufacturing, where he led and organized teams of 50+ employees, earning a reputation for leadership and operational excellence.
While his career in the tech industry was thriving, Alex had bigger ambitions—he wanted to apply his corporate expertise to his own business. The search for the right industry and location led him to Arizona in 1985, where he saw immense potential in asphalt and construction. With a vision to bring structured corporate management to an industry that often lacked it, he founded American Asphalt. At the time, managing an asphalt business with corporate-level precision was unheard of in the Valley. But it was precisely this approach that set American Asphalt apart and fueled its success for the past 40 years.
The company’s long list of satisfied customers speaks for itself, with a standout achievement being its role as a contractor on the first leg of the Phoenix Light Rail—a lasting testament to Alex’s expertise and dedication. Today, Alex enjoys life in Cave Creek, AZ, with a second home in Rocky Point. His journey from Silicon Valley to the asphalt industry is a testament to his adaptability, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
After all, life is a highway—and Alex Gutierrez has paved his own way to success.
