Alex Gutierrez Sr.

Profile

Alex Gutierrez Sr.Owner and CEO

Alex Gutierrez, founder and CEO of American Asphalt, took an unconventional path into the asphalt and construction industry. Born and raised in San Jose, California, he began his career in electronics as one of the first employees at Atari. That experience sparked a lasting interest in innovation, and as Silicon Valley grew he moved into manufacturing, leading and organizing teams of more than 50 people.

While his technology career was thriving, Alex wanted to apply that corporate expertise to a business of his own. The search for the right industry and location brought him to Arizona in 1985, where he saw real potential in asphalt and construction. He founded American Asphalt with a plan to run a paving company with structured corporate management, an approach that was practically unheard of in the Valley at the time. That discipline is what set the company apart and has carried it for 40 years.

The company's long list of satisfied customers speaks for itself, including its role as a contractor on the first leg of the Phoenix light rail. Today Alex lives in Cave Creek, Arizona, with a second home in Rocky Point. His path from Silicon Valley to the asphalt industry reflects the adaptability, leadership, and commitment to excellence that still guide every American Asphalt crew.
