Type 3 Slurry Seal
ISSA-spec coarse-aggregate slurry seal built for high-traffic arterials, primary routes, and surfaces that need maximum skid resistance and rut-filling capability.
THE MOST DURABLE SLURRY
Type 3 is the coarsest of the three ISSA slurry seal gradations. A heavier aggregate blend is mixed with polymer-modified emulsion, mineral filler, and water to build a thicker, more rugged wearing course, designed for pavement carrying heavy or high-speed traffic where surface friction and rut resistance matter most.
- Meets ISSA A105 Type 3 gradation
- Maximum skid resistance of the three slurry types
- Available with polymer-modified emulsion
- Can fill slight depressions and shallow wheel ruts

BUILT FOR ARTERIALS & HIGHWAYS
Primary routes, arterials, and high-speed roadways put more demand on a surface than any other pavement type, more friction loss, more rutting, higher risk of hydroplaning. Type 3 slurry seal answers that demand directly, rebuilding surface texture and skid resistance in a single application.
Maximum skid resistance
The coarsest aggregate profile of any ISSA slurry type, built for surfaces where traction matters most.
Fills minor depressions
Levels shallow wheel ruts and low spots that trap water and increase hydroplaning risk.
Stops severe raveling
Locks down loose, aged aggregate on heavily weathered pavement.
Built for speed & volume
Engineered for primary routes, interstates, and arterials, not just local streets.
Fast return to service
Minimal lane closure time for high-traffic corridors that can't stay shut long.
Low-cost preservation
A fraction of the cost of a mill-and-overlay when applied at the right point in the pavement's life.
BUILT FOR HIGH-USE STREETS
Type 3 is specified anywhere pavement demands maximum durability and surface friction, routes where traffic volume, speed, or standing water risk make a lighter slurry insufficient.
Primary & Arterial Roadways
The go-to gradation for high-volume city and county arterials.
Highways & Interstate Shoulders
Built to withstand higher speeds and heavier axle loads.
Wheel Rut & Depression Fill
Levels shallow ruts that collect water and create hydroplaning risk.
Industrial & Heavy-Vehicle Corridors
Holds up under repeated heavy-truck traffic.
Severe Raveling Restoration
Rebuilds badly weathered, aggregate-loss surfaces in a single pass.
Municipal & DOT Projects
Meets spec for public-agency pavement preservation programs.
The Type 3 Application Process
A Type 3 slurry seal is a job-mixed, cold-applied surface treatment. The coarse aggregate, emulsion, mineral filler, water, and additives are proportioned inside a continuous-run slurry machine and spread in a single pass, forming the thickest wearing course of the three ISSA gradations.
A short field video showing Type 3 slurry seal applied to an arterial roadway, the continuous-run paver mixes and spreads the coarse aggregate blend in a single controlled pass.
- 01Step
Surface preparation
Sweep and clean the pavement, patch potholes, and rout-and-seal any cracks wider than 1/4 inch beforehand.
- 02Step
Job-mix design
ISSA A105 mix design confirms aggregate gradation, emulsion residue, set time, and wet-track abrasion values for Type 3.
- 03Step
Continuous-run placement
A calibrated slurry paver mixes and spreads the coarse material behind the machine in a single pass, filling minor depressions as it goes.
- 04Step
Cure and open to traffic
Emulsion breaks and water evaporates; the surface opens to traffic in roughly 1 – 3 hours depending on conditions.

- Cure to traffic1 – 3 hours (weather dependent)
- Expected life5 – 7 years
Ideal Candidate Pavement
Type 3 is best suited to high-traffic, high-speed pavement showing severe raveling, friction loss, or shallow surface depressions, surfaces that demand more durability and skid resistance than Type 2provides.
Good fit
- Severe raveling or significant aggregate loss
- Low skid resistance on high-speed or high-volume routes
- Shallow wheel ruts or minor surface depressions
- Heavy or fast-moving traffic (arterials, highways, industrial corridors)
Not a fit, repair first
- Potholes, alligator cracking, or base failure
- Deep structural rutting or base instability
- Standing water from drainage/grading issues, not surface wear
- Load-bearing failures requiring reconstruction, not surface treatment
