Type 2 Slurry Seal
ISSA-spec medium-aggregate slurry seal built for streets, arterials, and parking areas carrying moderate-to-heavy traffic, restoring skid resistance and sealing out raveling before it spreads.
The Most-Used Surface Seal
Type 2 is the most widely specified of the three ISSA slurry seal gradations. A coarser aggregate blend than Type 1 is mixed with polymer-modified emulsion, mineral filler, and water to form a thicker, more durable wearing course, built to stand up to daily traffic while sealing the pavement below from water and UV damage.
- Meets ISSA A105 Type 2 gradation
- Most common slurry seal specification industry-wide
- Available with polymer-modified emulsion
- Restores skid resistance on worn, polished surfaces

BUILT FOR HIGH-USE PAVEMENT
Traffic wear, oxidation, and UV exposure strip surface friction and loosen aggregate faster on high-use pavement than on low-speed surfaces. A well-timed Type 2 slurry seal restores a tight, durable wearing course and can add 5 – 7 years of service life at a fraction of the cost of a mill-and-overlay.
Seals out water
Fills surface voids and hairline cracks so moisture can't reach the base course.
Stops raveling
Locks down loose aggregate before oxidation turns into a rough, deteriorating surface.
Restores skid resistance
Rebuilds surface friction lost to years of tire wear and polishing.
Built for traffic
Thicker, coarser aggregate profile designed to hold up under repeated vehicle loads.
Fast return to service
Minimal downtime for streets, lots, and roadways that can't stay closed long.
Low-cost preservation
A fraction of the cost of reconstruction when applied at the right point in the pavement's life.
BUILT FOR HIGH-USE STREETS
Type 2 is the go-to specification anywhere pavement sees consistent daily traffic and needs a durable, long-wearing surface rather than a light cosmetic seal.
Municipal & City Streets
The standard gradation for city and county street maintenance programs statewide.
Commercial & Retail Parking Lots
Handles daily customer and delivery traffic without losing surface integrity.
HOA & Community Roadways
A durable upgrade from Type 1 for neighborhoods with heavier vehicle traffic.
Industrial Access Roads
Withstands repeated heavy-vehicle turning and loading traffic.
Moderate-to-Heavy Traffic Corridors
Purpose-built for arterials and collector roads.
Raveling & Oxidation Restoration
Seals and rebuilds surfaces already showing wear from age and traffic.
The Type 2 Application Process
A Type 2 slurry seal is a job-mixed, cold-applied surface treatment. The coarser aggregate, emulsion, mineral filler, water, and additives are proportioned inside a continuous-run slurry machine and spread across the pavement in a single pass, forming a thicker wearing course than Type 1.
A short field video showing Type 2 slurry seal applied to a street, the continuous-run paver mixes and spreads the coarser aggregate blend in a single controlled pass.
- 01Step
Surface preparation
Sweep and clean the pavement, patch potholes, and rout-and-seal any cracks wider than 1/4 inch beforehand.
- 02Step
Job-mix design
ISSA A105 mix design confirms aggregate gradation, emulsion residue, set time, and wet-track abrasion values for Type 2.
- 03Step
Continuous-run placement
A calibrated slurry paver mixes and spreads the coarser material behind the machine in a single pass.
- 04Step
Cure and open to traffic
Emulsion breaks and water evaporates; the surface opens to traffic in roughly 1 – 3 hours depending on conditions.

Ideal Candidate Pavement
Type 2 is best suited to pavement showing moderate to severe raveling, oxidation, or loss of surface friction, surfaces that need a more durable wearing course than Type 1 provides, without requiring a fullmill-and-overlay.
Good fit
- Moderate to severe raveling or aggregate loss
- Reduced skid resistance from a polished, worn surface
- Medium to heavy traffic volumes (streets, arterials, industrial lots)
- Fine-to-moderate surface cracking, up to about 1/4 inch
Not a fit, repair first
- Potholes, alligator cracking, or base failure
- Heavy structural cracking or rutting
- Standing water / drainage issues
- Very high-speed roads or high-friction-demand routes (consider Type 3)
